Bring the outdoors in
Patio doors are where indoor and outdoor living meet. We'll help you choose the material, glass, and configuration that fit your room and budget, then install it right.
Weather Shield Next Gen contemporary door wall
We are a Weather Shield distributor, and this is their newest contemporary slider. Come in and slide it once. You will feel the difference from a traditional door wall right away.
Opens with the push of a hand
European-style hardware does the work. Turn the handle and it pulls the panel in tight against the frame for a weather-tight seal, which makes it a strong choice on the water or anywhere with a tough exposure. Then it slides open on about five pounds of pressure.
Low sill, big glass
A low-profile sill sits much closer to the floor than a standard slider, so the step across is far smaller, easier for a walker or wheelchair and less of a trip edge. Ask us for the exact sill height for your opening. Build panels up to five feet wide by ten feet tall, with overall units up to twenty feet for big contemporary openings.
Sliding or French: which patio door fits your room
The right patio door depends on how the room is used, how much wall you have, and how hard the weather hits that side of the house.
Sliding patio doors
The most common replacement for a Metro Detroit door wall. No swing space needed, big glass, and the best value. Vinyl from Home Guard; wood, clad, and aluminum from Weather Shield.
Hinged French doors
Two swinging panels for a traditional look and a wide clear opening. They need room to swing, so they suit larger rooms and covered patios.
Multi-slide and contemporary
Weather Shield's Next Gen door wall slides on a low sill with panels up to five feet wide and ten feet tall. Come in and slide it; it is the one people remember from the showroom.
Frame material
Vinyl for value and low upkeep. Wood for warmth in older and higher-end homes. Aluminum-clad for a wood interior with a tough exterior. Aluminum for the slimmest modern frame.
Glass and energy
Insulated glass with low-E coating and argon fill is available across the lines we carry. On a west or lake-facing wall, ask about the glass package; it makes a bigger difference than the frame.
Screens, locks, and blinds
Sliders from the lines we carry include a screen panel; we confirm it on your quote. Ask about multi-point locks, foot bolts, and between-the-glass blinds where the line offers them.
Replace or repair a patio door?
Rollers, handles, locks, and screens on an existing slider are repairable, and we do it. If the glass has fogged between the panes, the frame is warped, or the door drafts no matter how it is adjusted, a new patio door is the better spend. We quote both so you can decide.
How patio door installation works
We measure the rough opening and check the sill and surrounding framing for water damage. You choose the style, frame, glass, and hardware in the showroom. On install day we remove the old door, set and square the new unit, insulate and seal it, and finish the interior and exterior trim. Ask us about removal of the old door.

Common questions
Sliding or swinging?
Sliders save floor space and cost less; hinged French doors give a traditional look and a wider clear opening but need swing room. We will walk the room with you.
What is a door wall?
Door wall is the Metro Detroit term for a sliding glass patio door. If yours is original to the house, it is probably single-pane or an early double-pane and worth replacing for comfort alone.
Can you replace my door wall with the same size?
Usually, yes. Standard sliders come in common widths and we order to your opening. If the opening is unusual, Weather Shield builds to size.
What makes a patio door energy efficient?
The glass package: low-E coating, argon fill, and a warm-edge spacer. Then a frame that does not conduct cold, and a tight multi-point lock that pulls the panel into the seal.
Do you repair sliding patio doors?
Yes. Rollers, handles, locks, and screens are repairable on most sliders. If the glass has fogged, the sealed unit has failed and replacement is the fix.
Do patio doors come with screens?
Sliding patio doors from the lines we carry include a screen panel; we confirm it on your quote. French doors can be fitted with screens on many models; ask when you choose the door.
